What a ceramic coating actually does
Under a minute, from the first wipe to the first rain, with a trip into the paint on the way.
- The coating is worked into the paint with a cross-hatch.
- Magnified to a cross-section of the paint, from the steel up: steel, primer, base coat and clear coat.
- The coating goes on top, seeps into the clear coat’s microscopic pores and bonds to them.
- The solvents flash off, leaving a rainbow haze that is buffed level with a microfibre towel.
- It cures hard over 10 hours.
- Weeks later in the rain, water beads on the coated half and runs off with the dirt; on the uncoated half it clings and the dirt stays.
- Then a hose-down: the coated half sheets clean to a mirror finish, while the uncoated half is left streaked and dirty.
